Akershus Fortress is located in the heart of Oslo, next to Aker Brygge (the harbour) and The City Hall. Akershus fortress has a long history, many well-known historic figures and there are also many exciting ghost stories.
The Fortress is open for audience all year, and still has some military bases here. In the summer one also can see the outdoors theatre, shows and concerts. There are some small museums inside the fortress, but the most popular sight is of course Akershus Castle.
The castle dates from 1299 and is a medieval castle. It was a royal residence and later developed to a fortress in 1592. It was rebuilt into a renaissance castle in 1637-1648 (this was done by the Danish-norwegian King Christian IV.
The castle includes many magnificent halls and historic moments. It also has it’s own church and the Royal Mausoleum. If you’re not in luck and can’t get a guided tour, I would highly recommend the audio guide. There are some interesting facts and stories, also funny when you’ll visit the dungeon.
